How to Hire the Right Videographer for your Wedding Day
One of the questions we get asked most often is “Do you do video too?” Alas, we do not! But what we DO know is how to find the right videographer for your wedding day.
We’ve had the pleasure of working alongside some industry greats over the years, so here’s what to look out for when hiring the right videographer for your special day (plus a bunch of faves we recommend!).
Make sure everyone is on the same team
Firstly, if you’re at all in doubt about including video in your wedding budget, let’s chat. In our experience, videographers sometimes pop up as a last minute addition because of well-meaning pressure from family and friends, so it’s really important to choose the right person for the job. Look for someone that will work well alongside your photographer; they should have a similar style and approach to capturing your day so they can document all the details as a team. The last thing you want is your photographer and videographer impeding each other and appearing in the others’ photos/video!Think about the video style
There are lots of different ways to put a wedding video together, so have a think about what you might like to look back on the most. Some videographers create short highlight videos to music, some include excerpts from the speeches and vows, some videos are chronological in order of the day, while others are a mash up of highlights. You might be looking for something classic and cinematic, or slightly more artsy and creative. Or maybe you’re after something with that old film camera feel. There are wonderful videographers that specialise in all of the above so it’s about finding the one that best suits you and your style!Think about the way they work
As well as the style of actual video, it’s also important to consider the work style of your videographer! We always recommend finding a videographer who has a relaxed, easy going nature that can help you feel calm and at ease on the day. Someone that’s just nice to be around is a really underrated quality - chances are you’ll be spending several hours together on the day so you want to really get along. It’s also nice to have someone that will capture the day as it naturally unfolds so you don’t have to worry about about being directed to do lots of things. Your number 1 job for the day is to enjoy!Ask your photographer!
If you’ve already booked your photographer, ask them who they recommend! You’ll probably find that those with similar styles and approaches already have a history of working together, so you can feel 100% confidence that they’ll make the perfect team. It doesn’t matter who you book first either! You might find a videographer that you love who can point you in the direction of a great photographer too.
Here are some of our favourite videographers to get you started.
Moon & Back
We used Moon & Back for our own wedding and were thrilled with the whole experience. Their team is spread across the globe, they love to travel and they have a really relaxed and quiet approach to telling your wedding day story.
Ryan Lee Adams
Ryan is a lovely, easy going, talented videographer that you’ll hardly notice on the day as he captures your celebration documentary style. He’s collaborated with Moon & Back many times so their style and approach is very similar. Highly recommend!
Nathan Kaso Weddings
Nathan Kaso uses energetic music combined with candid, doco-style shooting and a bit of Kodak super 8 (yep, real film) to produce unique wedding videos that are fun to watch and capture the emotion that makes the day so special. He prides himself on creating wedding films that won’t put you to sleep.
Me & My Camera
Danae combines her love of story telling, adventure and incredible music to create sweet wedding films that are captured candidly and effortlessly. Her style is very unobtrusive, and she focuses on all the amazing things that happen naturally during your special day, so you won’t be directed to do anything but have fun!
Rachael Mary Films
Rachael is a Mornington Peninsula local like us, but she’s available for weddings all over the country (and the world!). She’s a wonderful storyteller who creates warm, modern, naturally styled wedding films - not “wedding videos”. She’s kind, personal, professional and films the day as it naturally unfolds. We are so lucky to work with an amazing creative community down here on the Peninsula!
