What to do if it Rains on Your Wedding Day

Most people think a sunny day makes for the best photos, but it’s actually kind of the opposite!

Bright sunshine can actually make the photos too bright, have heavy shadows, and extreme heat/flies/squinting/sweating can obviously make things a bit uncomfortable. It’s actually overcast days that are the most perfect, but we can’t control the weather so it’s important not to get too hung up on the forecast (or at least try not to!).

If it rains, we own it! A large umbrella is always very romantic and we’ll have a wet weather back up plan with some great undercover locations. I’m also more than happy to get out in the rain and get some epic rain shots with you, and I’ve never photographed a wet weather wedding that didn’t turn out beautifully.

Once I was photographing a couple at a winery and the weather turned on us completely unexpectedly - we ran inside for cover, their umbrella flipped upside down and by the time we got inside my clothes were completely soaked through (including socks, not ideal!). The groom changed his shirt, the bride dried herself off with a towel and the hand dryer in the bathroom and they both laughed it off and just hit the dance floor - legends!

Needless to say I now pack an extra pair of socks for every wedding I photograph, but here are some of the other ways we prepare for wet weather on your wedding day:

  1. UMBRELLAS
I have a secret stash of simple clear umbrellas in the boot of my car at ALL times, so if we’re caught off guard by a sudden downpour we’ll always be okay.

  2. STAYING ON TOP OF THE FORECAST
Rach will check the forecast for your wedding every single day for the whole week leading up to it. Obsessive? Maybe. But she treats every wedding like it’s her own and has 3 different weather apps on her phone to get the most comprehensive weather lowdown.

  1. WET WEATHER BACK UP PLANS
We usually have 3 approaches to wet weather. The first is to just be patient and wait for breaks in the rain. In my experience, it rarely rains all day and we’ll still be able to find opportunities to duck out and get some gorgeous shots in your favourite spots - it just might mean we don’t get all of your couple portraits done in one go, which is totally fine!

The second is to stick to undercover spots for photos. We’ll always have a list of these handy. They might include things like under arches or beautiful doorways, or indoors at a restaurant or bar nearby.

Lastly, if you’re feeling game we can jump out in the wet weather and get some epic rain shots. The key here is to just let your hair down, have fun and enjoy! And it always makes for the most beautiful and memorable photos.

  2. HIRE A PLANNER
We always recommend hiring a wedding planner, but they are especially wonderful if you’re worried about the weather on your big day. You can leave the last minute scrambling/moving furniture/enacting back up plans up to them and focus on enjoying your newly wedded bliss!

  3. SMILE, YOU JUST GOT MARRIED!
Rain, hail or shine, it’s honestly all in your attitude. While I’m always prepared and super confident about what to do when it rains, your photos really depend on you. It’s you and your husband or wife that make the day, and your love will shine no matter how heavy the clouds! Plus, you guys totally set the tone for your day, so if you’re feeling relaxed and just soaking up every moment regardless of the weather, I guarantee your guests will feed off that vibe and it will create an amazing atmosphere.
